BRUNSWICK — Yvette Bisson, 91, of Brunswick, died Sunday at Freeport Nursing Home in Freeport. 

She was born Nov. 12, 1921, in Brunswick, to Jean and Corinne Poulin.

Bisson attended St. John’s School, class of 1937, and also attended Brunswick High School.

In 1942 she married Roland Bisson, buying the house next to her parents’ home. Roland was drafted just 10 months after their wedding. 

Bisson worked the night shift in the spinning room at Varney Mill and would often walk home from the mill at 2 a.m. 

She spent most of her life as a homemaker, caring for her children until they were school-aged. She worked 20 years in dining services at Bowdoin College, retiring in 1988. She loved being around young people and speaking French with the international students.

Bisson could knit practically anything and was always knitting things for her children, their spouses and her grandchildren. She loved to watch things grow and took great pride in her garden. Roland and she also loved traveling, and made many road trips to Canada to visit relatives.

She was known as “Memere” to many children, whether they were related to her or not.

Surviving are all of her children, Maurice and his wife, Lorraine, of Brunswick, Donald and his wife, Jan, of Huntsville, Ala., Lionel and his wife, Ann, of Stafford Springs, Conn., Claude and his wife, Sue, of Hampden, Mass., and Giselle Rowe of Bennett, Colo. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are her sisters, Lorraine Bisson, of Topsham, Doris Knight of Dude City, Fla., Dorina Morin of Brunswick, Pauline Gamache of Brunswick, Jeannine Pelletier of Bristol, Conn. She is also survived by her brothers, Roland Poulin of Freeport and Leon Poulin of Brunswick.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 12 p.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Brunswick. Burial beside her husband in St. John’s Cemetery, Brunswick, will be held in the spring.
