Yvette B. Small, 92: Lifetime commitment to community service

BATH — Yvette Bernadette Picard Small, 92, died Nov. 13.

Born in Brunswick, daughter of Amedee and Emerilda Picard, she graduated from Brunswick High School in 1934 and from Mount Merici in 1936.

For 60 years she worked as a tax consultant.

In June 1940 she married Charles T. Small and had three children together.

Over the years, she had an exemplary community service record, actively volunteering with organizations including Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Plant Memorial Auxiliary, Parent Teacher Associations, Rotary Anne, St. Mary’s Sodality, the Cosmopolitan Club, and Mid Coast Hospital Auxiliary.

Additionally, she volunteered for 14 years at the Bath Hospital coffee shop and cooked for a local soup kitchen. She held officer positions with Bath Area Senior Citizens and Coasters, and served as chairman of the board for the Salvation Army for over 25 years.

Her commitment to community service earned her awards from Bath Business and Professional Women, the Maine Federation of Women’s club, The Emblem Club, and St. Mary’s Church.

A favorite hobby was singing, and she was a member of the singing group, Royal River Chapter of Sweet Adeline’s, and the St. Mary’s Church choir for over 30 years.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles T. Small in 1984; and two sons, Joseph Seth Small in 1997 and Gerald T. Small in 2009.

Survivors include her daughter, Commander Colette Kokron, currently serving in Baghdad, Iraq and her husband Lt. Com. Edwin J. Kokron of Virginia Beach, Va; three grandchildren, Joseph C. E. Small, Justin T. Small, and Michelle Small, all of Bath.

Visiting hours will be 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20 at David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21, at All Saints Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 144 Lincoln St., Bath, with a reception to follow in the church hall.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. John’s Elementary School, 39 Pleasant St., Brunswick, ME.
