Nearly 100 fans of all ages showed up last Sunday to watch the Freeport Historical Society’s second annual Vintage Baseball Game at Pettengill Farm. In the game between the Maine-based Dirigo Vintage Baseball Team and the Essex Baseball Team from Massachusetts, players were not allowed to wear gloves and were out if a fly ball was caught in the air or on the first bounce. Pitches were all underhanded and the softball-sized baseballs were typical of the era. Here, Essex pitcher Brian Besse throws out a Dirigo player heading for first base.
