YARMOUTH — Ice it! Bakery is opening a new store in Portland’s Deering Center.

The bakery will open on the ground floor of a new three-story apartment building at 502 Stevens Ave.

Interior renovations of the Deering cafe are underway and will aim to mirror the look and layout of the existing bakery at 305 Route 1, owner Alan Fried said.

Fried said he expects the approximately 700-square-foot space to open in late February. It will offer the same products and interactive programs that allow customers to decorate their own cupcakes and cakes at the Yarmouth cafe.

A full coffee service and espresso bar, and light breakfast and lunch menu items, will also be offered.

The Deering shop will be open seven days a week, 6 a.m.-6 p.m., unlike the Yarmouth store, which is closed Sundays and Mondays.

Fried opened the bakery on Route 1 six years ago and said he’s been hoping to expand for several years.

“We learned about this new building opening up, which was the perfect opportunity for us to expand,” he said.

Fried added that the densely populated neighborhood and proximity to surrounding schools made Stevens Avenue the ideal space for a bakery.

“There aren’t any existing bakeries in the neighborhood,” Fried said. “Our custom cakes and cupcakes are pretty well known and people come pretty far for those.”

Besides the custom baked-goods, Fried said Ice it! Bakery offers gluten-free and vegan options.

He said he doesn’t plan to stop in Portland and hopes to continue to grow the business over the next several years.

“We would certainly like to keep expanding. We’re really ready for the growth,” Fried said. “But for now, I think it’s really going to be a boom to have a place like ours in Portland.”
