YARMOUTH — The Public Works Department plans to present its revamped North Road garage proposal to the Town Council at a workshop meeting next week after scaling back its original plan.
The new plan would cost $2.3 million and add a wash bay and a bay for maintenance. It also includes acquisition of land next to the property to allow flexibility for future expansion.
“It’s a project that we really need to get done and it probably won’t get cheaper in the future,” Town Manager Nat Tupper said.
The garage handles all maintenance for town vehicles and equipment, everything from chainsaws and lawnmowers to police cars and fire trucks. It’s also the operation base for the snow plows in the winter.
The current facility, built in the 1960s, is undersized and not large enough for some of the fire trucks, Public Works Director Erik Street said. This forces some of the work to be done outside or sometimes to get contracted out.
The initial plan for the garage was going to cost about $7 million and included building a new facility and moving two sports fields to make room for the project.
The new proposal is much less ambitious and comes in around the cost the Town Council suggested, Tupper said.
“We’ve tried to only pick our most urgent priorities that provide the greatest value and least cost to community,” he said. “If we brought (the town) anything less, we wouldn’t be bringing them value.”
The workshop will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 2, in the American Legion Log Cabin and will likely move to be voted on at the next Town Council meeting on Aug. 16.
