YARMOUTH — The Town Council is expected to confirm Lt. Daniel Gallant as the town’s new police chief at its meeting next week.
Gallant will replace Chief Mike Morrill, who is retiring as of June 14.
Town Manager Nat Tupper said Gallant was the top choice for the post and he has earned the right to lead the Police Department through many years of exemplary service.
Gallant joined the department in 1995 and “has established himself as a trusted and competent leader in the law enforcement community,” according to Tupper, who announced Gallant’s promotion at the May 2 council workshop.
Tupper said the council is scheduled to officially appoint Gallant police chief at 7 p.m. May 16, and said he personally has “great confidence” in Gallant’s ability to lead the department, “as does Chief Morrill.”
At last week’s workshop, Tupper said he was “very pleased” to announce that Gallant had been offered and accepted the job.
“I am most delighted to announce this promotion,” he said in a memo sent to town staff and councilors. Tupper said although he’s “feeling quite a loss at the prospect of Chief Morrill’s retirement,” the choice of Gallant ensures that “Yarmouth will continue to be served with excellence.”
This week Morrill said, “I’ve had the privilege of working with Lt. Daniel Gallant for 24 years, as he’s progressed through the ranks of the department.” Morrill added that he had “the honor of promoting him twice,” first to the rank of sergeant in 2003 and then to lieutenant in 2018.
Gallant’s “community knowledge, training, dedication to the job and leadership are all attributes that will serve the Yarmouth community well in the future,” Morrill added.
“I’m extremely proud to witness someone I’ve worked so closely with be offered the chief’s position and to know the future of the department will be in his very capable hands,” he said.
“I look forward to reading and hearing about the police department’s future accomplishments under Chief Gallant’s leadership.”
Lt. Daniel Gallant has been chosen as Yarmouth’s new police chief. The Town Council is scheduled to confirm his promotion May 16.
