YARMOUTH — Merrill Memorial Library will kick off the community portion of its renovation campaign with an ice cream social on its lawn on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 2-4 p.m.

Voters approved a $1.5 million bond issue in June to support a renovation of the 108-year-old library. The library is responsible for raising an additional $1 million on its own to fund the renovation. Construction may begin as early as November, said Gro Flatebo, president of the library board.

At the ice cream social, volunteers will unveil a thermometer to mark fundraising progress and introduce a Web-based gift registry that will go online later this month, enabling supporters to donate a variety of materials as part of the renovation. The building will be open for tours, and staff will be on hand to discuss building plans.
