YARMOUTH — The Community Garden will celebrate with a summer kick-off event this Saturday, June 20, from 10 a.m. to noon with crafts, gardening, classes, snacks and more.

Christine Slader, coordinator of the Children’s Garden, said the event is geared toward children, but will be fun for all family members.

“This event is about getting your hands dirty, having fun, seeing the gardens and being creative,” she said. “We will plant seedlings, play games and enjoy the time outside.”

Participants will have an opportunity to help paint garden signs and make scarecrows, listen to live fiddle music and enjoy fresh snacks and treats.

The Community Garden has three sections with three different goals: a renters garden with 100-square-foot plots for individual use, a community plot that raises food for those in need, and a children’s garden to teach children ages 4-9 about the benefits of gardening.

Slader said the renters garden plots are completely filled this year, and the children’s garden program is nearly at capacity.

“People have really shown an interest in gardening this year,” she said. “We have a great turnout of gardeners, volunteers and interested families.”

In addition to the activities this Saturday, Slader said beekeeper Tom Delaney will give a workshop on beekeeping. It is an educational experience for both adults and children, she said.

“Having the beehive in the garden last year was beneficial to everyone,” Slader said. “Tom was able to raise a lot of honey, the bees helped pollinate the garden, and the children learned about the benefits of bees.”

There is no cost to attend the kickoff event, and the rain date will be Sunday, June 21.

“This activity is a nice way to spend a few hours,” Slader said. “Not many events are this enjoyable, educational and free anymore.”
