PORTLAND — Work to renovate and expand the fire station at 380 Allen Ave. is expected to begin this fall.

City spokeswoman Jessica Grondin announced the project’s estimated start time in a June 22 press release. The fire station was damaged in a kitchen fire in October 2017, and has been closed since then.

Interim Fire Chief Keith Gautreau said work to repair and add on to the station was delayed by “insurance issues” and time needed for abatement of some materials.

“We’re excited to get the renovation underway on a new facility that will not only work for both the men and women emergency responders in our department today, but those that will work for the department in the future,” Gautreau said in the press release.

The renovated station will include a 500-square-foot addition and redesigned interior space, according to the press release. The city is wrapping up design details now, and hopes the permitting process will be completed in August.
