PORTLAND — Residents of the city’s coastal islands can reduce the risk of wildfires by having brush and debris chipped by city crews next week.
The federally funded Defensible Space Chipping Program begins Monday, Aug. 4, on Cushing Island. Residents can place cleared brush curbside for chipping by the city Fire and Public Services departments and Maine Forest Service.
Chipping will follow on Cliff Island on Aug. 5, Great Diamond Island on Aug. 6, Little Diamond Island on Aug. 7 and Peaks Island on Aug. 8. The wood chips can be left for resident’s use, or will be left at preselected island areas.
Register for the service by contacting Mike Murray at 756-8288 or email@example.com. Shoreline trees, rotting wood and invasive species will not be accepted.
