BATH — A Thomaston woman was in critical condition at Maine Medical Center in Portland Tuesday morning after being shot in the head Monday afternoon in a supermarket parking lot, according to the hospital.

Chelsea Jones, 22, was shot by her boyfriend, Dylan Grubbs, 23, also of Thomaston, while she sat in the front passenger seat of an SUV, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Grubbs, who had driven to the lot to sell a handgun, was showing the weapon to a prospective buyer outside the vehicle when the gun fired, McCausland said.

Bath and Maine State Police are investigating the shooting. Police have interviewed Grubbs, who is cooperating with investigators, McCausland said. They have also questioned the man who planned to buy the gun and saw the shooting, he said.

Bath police on Monday said they believed the shooting was an accident. No arrests have been made.

The gun is at the state police crime lab for inspection, according to McCausland.

Jones was first transported to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, then taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland, police said.

Police and EMS workers responded to the Shaw’s parking lot at 1 Chandler Drive at 3:54 p.m. Monday.
