A new basketball and hockey season is underway in the Mid-Coast and early results have been mixed.

Here’s a glimpse:

Girls’ basketball

Brunswick’s girls’ basketball team, the defending Class A South champion, opened with an 88-17 domination at Morse. The Dragons returned to action Wednesday when they welcomed rival Mt. Ararat for their home opener. Brunswick visits Falmouth Friday and is back home Tuesday of next week to meet Lewiston.

Mt. Ararat started with a 66-37 home loss to Leavitt. After going to Brunswick Wednesday, the Eagles are home with Kennebunk Friday and home against Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Morse started with an 88-17 home loss to Brunswick and hoped to bounce back Wednesday at Lincoln Academy. The Shipbuilders host Westbrook Friday and go to Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.

Hyde opened with games at Islesboro Monday and at home versus North Yarmouth Academy Thursday. The Phoenix are then idle until Jan. 6.

Boys’ basketball

On the boys’ side, Brunswick held off visiting Morse, 43-37, in its opener. After hosting Mt. Ararat Wednesday, the Dragons welcome Falmouth Friday and play at Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat also opened with a victory, 74-50, at Leavitt. The Eagles went to Brunswick Wednesday and visit Kennebunk Friday. They go to Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Morse dropped its opener, 43-37, to visiting Brunswick, but evened its record Monday with a 65-52 home win over Lincoln Academy. The Shipbuilders are at Westbrook Friday and host Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.

Boys’ hockey

On the boys’ side, Brunswick started with a 4-3 loss at South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete. The Dragons hosted Cony Wednesday and welcome Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon Friday before going to Greely Tuesday of next week.

The Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon co-op team opened at home Wednesday against South Portland, then goes to Brunswick Friday before visiting Yarmouth Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ hockey

Brunswick’s girls’ hockey started 0-4, losing at Portland/Deering (9-2), and Lewiston (10-1), at home to Cheverus (10-3) and at Winslow (5-2). The Dragons  then got in the win column Saturday, downing host Gorham, 5-1. Brunswick was home with Biddeford Wednesday and welcomes Mt. Ararat/Morse Friday.

Mt. Ararat/Morse lost its first five outings: 7-1 to visiting Biddeford, 4-0 at Edward Little, 5-1 at home to Winslow, 5-0 at Greely and 2-1 to visiting Yarmouth. Mt. Ararat/Morse goes to Brunswick Friday.
