The 2015-16 winter sports season is underway and there’s plenty of excitement in the Mid-Coast.

Here’s a glimpse:

Boys’ basketball

A new basketball season brings an abundance of change as the state now has five classes (Brunswick, Morse and Mt. Ararat are now in Class A South) and teams will be playing some unfamiliar foes in the regular season.

On the court, Mt. Ararat’s boys started with a 47-43 victory at Leavitt and Brunswick prevailed at Morse, 53-43. Mt. Ararat was at Brunswick Tuesday, while Morse went to Leavitt. The Eagles visit the Shipbuilders Tuesday of next week. Brunswick was home against Mt. Ararat Tuesday, visits Greely for the first time Friday, then goes to Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Morse enjoyed a 36-30 home win over Brunswick in the teams’ mutual opener. The Shipbuilders were at Leavitt Tuesday, host Cape Elizabeth Friday and welcome Mt. Ararat Tuesday of next week.

Brunswick hoped to bounce back Tuesday when it welcomed Mt. Ararat. After hosting defending Class B champion Greely Friday, the Dragons are home with Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat dropped a 51-35 decision to visiting Lewiston in its first outing. After going to Brunswick Tuesday, the Eagles were at Westbrook Thursday and play at Morse Tuesday of next week.

Hyde, which is in Class C South this year, opened with a 48-43 victory at Temple Academy. The Phoenix went to Richmond Tuesday and go to Buckfield Saturday.

Boys’ hockey

On the ice, the Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon boys’ hockey co-op team started with a 5-3 home win over Massabesic/Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard Beach. The next game is Tuesday when Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth pays a visit.

Brunswick, which is in Class B South this year, opened with a 4-0 home loss to Cony/Hall-Dale/Monmouth. The Dragons were at Maranacook/Winthrop Wednesday, play at Lake Region Saturday and come home Monday to meet Cheverus.

Girls’ hockey

On the girls’ side, Brunswick opened with a 4-1 loss at Lewiston. After an 8-1 loss at Greely, the Dragons outlasted Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray-New Gloucester, 6-5, in overtime. Brunswick is home with Winslow/Erskine Academy Saturday and plays host to Cheverus Monday.

Mt. Ararat/Morse was 1-4 at press time. After opening with a 4-2 win over Gorham, Mt. Ararat/Morse lost to Yarmouth (8-0), Edward Little/Poland (3-0), Greely (8-0) and Lewiston (5-0). After playing at Portland/Deering Wednesday, Mt. Ararat/Morse welcomes York Tuesday of next week.
