Winter sports season ramps up

Winter action continued last week as some teams met new opponents and had mixed results.

Boys’ basketball

Brunswick and Mt. Ararat’s boys’ teams both won two of their first three games.

The Dragons followed up a 53-43 victory at Morse with a 59-47 home victory over Mt. Ararat. Friday, Brunswick lost at Greely, 62-49. The Dragons were at Edward Little Tuesday and hosted Falmouth Thursday. They welcome Leavitt Tuesday of next week.

The Eagles, who won, 47-43, at Leavitt, in their opener, bounced back from a 59-47 loss at Brunswick with a 48-44 home victory over Westbrook. Mt. Ararat was at Morse Tuesday and visited York Thursday. The Eagles are at Falmouth Tuesday of next week.

Morse followed its 53-43 Opening Night home loss to Brunswick with a thrilling 43-42 home win over Leavitt. The Shipbuilders then lost, 60-43, at Cape Elizabeth. Morse was home with Mt. Ararat Tuesday, welcomes Marshwood Friday and plays host to Greely Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ basketball

Morse’s girls started the season 2-1, sandwiching home wins over Brunswick (36-30) and Cape Elizabeth (45-35) around a 49-47 loss at Leavitt. The Shipbuilders were home with Mt. Ararat Tuesday, go to Marshwood Friday and visit defending Class B champion Greely Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat started with a 51-35 home loss to Leavitt with a 31-28 victory at Brunswick and a 49-33 setback at Westbrook. The Eagles went to Morse Tuesday and hosted York Thursday. Mt. Ararat welcomes Falmouth Tuesday of next week.

Brunswick started with a 36-30 loss at Morse, then fell at home to Mt. Ararat (31-28) and at home to Greely (52-36). After hosting Edward Little Tuesday and playing at Falmouth Thursday, the Dragons visit Leavitt Tuesday of next week.

Hyde won its opener, 48-43, at Temple Academy, then lost at Richmond (51-17) and Buckfield (52-36). The Phoenix closed the 2015 portion of their schedule Thursday at Kents Hill.


The Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon boys’ hockey co-op  team opened with a 5-3 home win over Massabesic. After hosting Cony Tuesday, Mt. Ararat visits Brunswick Friday and hosts South Portland Monday.

Brunswick lost its opener, 4-0, to visiting Cony, then beat host Maranacook (10-1) and Lake Region (8-3) before losing at home to Cheverus (7-1). After hosting Mt. Ararat Friday, the Dragons welcome Gardiner Tuesday.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick was 3-3 at press time after a 10-3 home victory over Winslow and a 4-1 home loss to Cheverus. The Dragons are home with Mt. Ararat/Morse Friday and Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland Tuesday.

Mt. Ararat’s co-op team with Morse fell to 1-5 last week with a 3-1 loss to Portland/Deering. After hosting York Tuesday, visiting Winslow Wednesday and going to Brunswick Friday, Mt. Ararat/Morse is at Cheverus Tuesday.


Brunswick’s boys’ swim team opened with a 94-74 win over Morse. Mt. Ararat dropped an 81-67 decision to Waterville.

Brunswick’s girls downed Morse, 111-58, in the opener. Mt. Ararat dropped an 83-80 deecision to Waterville.


The Brunswick/Mt. Ararat wrestling team opened with losses to Oxford Hills (40-12) and Westbrook (48-36).

Morse lost its first meet, 29-27, to Gardiner.
