The month of January and the winter sports regular season are halfway done and good times continue for local squads.

With the midway pole in the rearview mirror, here’s a look at where things stand:

Girls’ basketball

Brunswick’s girls’ basketball team was 9-1 and fourth in the Class A South Heal Points standings at press time following last Thursday’s 69-24 home win over Leavitt. The Dragons were at Lawrence Tuesday and hosted Messalonskee Thursday. After going to Leavitt Saturday, Brunswick visits Morse Monday.

“One more basket, a foul call down the stretch, maybe it is different,” said Mt. Ararat coach Andy Morris. “Our locker room was down, but I told them how proud of them that I am for the way they played, the character they showed and the way they represented their town today.”

The Eagles were at Lincoln Academy Thursday, go to Morse Saturday and visit Leavitt Monday.

Morse fell to 0-10 and 13th after a 73-35 home loss to defending Class AA champion Edward Little and a 53-18 setback at Lincoln Academy last week. The Shipbuilders were home with York Tuesday and hosted Medomak Valley Thursday. Morse welcomes Mt. Ararat Saturday and plays host to Brunswick Monday.

Boys’ basketball

On the boys’ side, Brunswick took a 5-4 mark and the No. 7 ranking in the Class A South Heals into Tuesday’s home game against Lawrence. Last week, the Dragons had a game at Leavitt postponed. Brunswick was at Messalonskee Thursday, hosts Leavitt Saturday and plays at Morse Monday.

Mt. Ararat was 5-6 and ninth in the region after a 58-47 home win over Camden Hills and a 49-44 setback at Freeport. Austin Damon had 15 points and Jared Balser added 14 in the loss to the Falcons.

“Our guys work,” said Eagles coach David Dubreuil. “When we play playoff-rated teams we tend to always rise to the challenge and we play at our opponents level.”

“We wanted to start the game coming out as strong as possible, try to put a few in, get the lead and go from there,” said Doring.

“We knew we had to be better than the Greely game,” Brunswick coach Mike Misner said. “I think for two periods in that game we competed, so that was the focus we wanted tonight, go out and compete like that.”
