Just a little over two weeks remain in the regular season for every sport but boys’ hockey and local teams have much to be excited about.

Here’s a look at what happened last week and a glimpse ahead:

Boys’ basketball

Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ basketball team has won four games in a row and five out of six, improving to 8-6 and fourth in the Class B South Heal Points standings after downing visiting York (60-52) and Yarmouth (45-27). Andrew Hartel had 17 points, Tanner Carpenter added 14 and Nate Mullen finished with 11 in the win over the Wildcats. Against the Clippers, Hartel had 14 points and 13 rebounds and Carpenter added 12 as the Capers never trailed.

“I think we’re getting in a groove now,” Carpenter said. “I think we’ve figured ourselves out and everybody is learning their role.”

“They boxed me out in the first half and I took that personally and came out strong in the second half,” Hartel said.

“We were a little better executing offensively tonight,” added Cape Elizabeth coach Jim Ray. “Our defense gave up just 10 points in the first half. We were able to make them uncomfortable.”

The Capers are back in action Tuesday of next week when they host two-time defending Class A champion Greely.

In Class AA South, South Portland was 7-5 and third behind Thornton Academy and Bonny Eagle following a 50-41 home loss to Deering Friday. Scott Lewis had 15 points. The Red Riots were without Geremi Baez for the game as he is sidelined with an ankle injury.

“I would never take anything away from Deering,” said South Portland coach Kevin Millington. “Their length bothered the heck out of us, but Geremi had been really, really playing well, so that hurt a lot.”
