Just a little over two weeks remain in the regular season for every sport but boys’ hockey and local teams have much to be excited about.

Here’s a look at what happened last week and a glimpse ahead:

Boys’ basketball

Greely’s two-time defending Class A champion boys’ basketball team improved to 9-3 Friday with a 68-37 victory at Fryeburg Academy. Logan Bagshaw had a game for the ages, making a school-record 10 3-pointers and outscoring the Raiders by producing 41 points on his own. Andrew Storey added 14 points and Zach Brown had 11. The Rangers (first in the Class A South Heal Points standings) went to Westbrook Tuesday, play at Gray-New Gloucester Friday and travel to Cape Elizabeth Tuesday of next week.

Falmouth began the week 10-2 and fourth in Class A South after a 51-47 home win over Thornton Academy last Tuesday. Mike Simonds scored 19 points and Nik Hester added 16. The Yachtsmen went to Biddeford Tuesday, visit South Portland Friday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and play host to Marshwood Tuesday of next week.

In Class B South, Freeport was sixth at press time after falling to 8-4 with home losses to Cape Elizabeth (46-43) and Yarmouth (50-43). In both games, the Falcons let leads slip away. Against the Capers, Freeport was up by 17 early in the second half, but fell short despite 15 points from Gabe Wagner and 10 from Eriksen Shea.

“We’re immature and we’re inexperienced and that came through big-time today,” Falcons coach Bill Ridge lamented. “We didn’t execute. We talked about what we wanted to do in the second half, but we couldn’t do it.”

In the loss to the Clippers, Freeport let a nine-point lead slip away and lost despite 13 points from Shea.

We’re really good of playing three quarters of a basketball game,” Ridge lamented. “We’re just not mentally there and capable of focusing for four quarters. We know we need to get better at that.”

The Falcons were at Class C South contender Waynflete Tuesday (see theforecaster.net for game story), host Fryeburg Academy Friday and welcome York Tuesday of next week.

Yarmouth sat 5-9 and seventh in Class B South following a 55-47 loss at Waynflete, a 50-43 win at Freeport and a 45-27 setback at Cape Elizabeth. Against the Flyers, reserve Will Cox had a team-high 13 points.

“That game got away from us when they made a couple shots, then suddenly, we didn’t play defense and if we don’t play defense, we won’t win many games,” Clippers coach Jonas Allen said.

In the victory, Jonny Torres had 12 points and Ashanti Haywood and Jake Rogers added 10 apiece.

“This means everything,” Torres said. “We knew Freeport was good, but we weren’t scared of them. We’re not scared of anyone. Everyone came out ready to go and battle.”

“We understand it’s our first year together and we get better every time we take the court, whether it’s practice or a game,” Allen said.

Against the Capers, Haywood had 11 points, but Yarmouth never led.

“We really laid an egg in terms of energy,” Allen said. “I can’t get mad at guys for missing shots. We had good looks, but my concern today was the complete lack of urgency.”

The Clippers host Wells Friday.

In Class C South, North Yarmouth Academy was 6-5 and eighth in the Heals following an 88-53 home loss to Traip Academy and a 54-23 win at Seacoast Christian. In the setback, Te’Andre King had 23 points and 17 rebounds. In the victory, Chris Hamblett led the way with 23 points and King added 19. After hosting Buckfield Tuesday, the Panthers welcome Old Orchard Beach Friday and play host to Pine Tree Academy Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, defending Class A champion Greely remains atop the Heal Points standings after extending its two-year win streak to 29 games by downing host NYA, 78-41, Friday. Anna DeWolfe led the way with 31 points, Camille Clement added 19 and Katie Fitzpatrick wound up with 10. The Rangers (13-0), who hope to return injured standout Brooke Obar this week, hosted Westbrook Tuesday and welcome Gray-New Gloucester Friday.

Falmouth fell to 1-11 and 11th in the region following a 36-31 overtime loss at Thornton Academy last week. Chelsea Gravier led the Yachtsmen with a dozen points. Falmouth was home with Biddeford Tuesday, welcomes South Portland Friday and travels to Marshwood Tuesday of next week.

In Class B South, Freeport improved to 10-2 and third behind Gray-New Gloucester and Oak Hills following a 33-30 win at Cape Elizabeth and a 49-41 victory at home over Yarmouth. Against the Capers, Caroline Smith and Rachel Wall had 10 points apiece. Smith then went off for a career-high 35 points in the win over the Clippers.

“My coach got me good shots, my teammates just got me the ball where I needed it and my dribble-drive was working today,” Smith said. “It helped my confidence getting off to a fast start.”

“Caroline is one of the top players in the conference,” said Falcons coach Seth Farrington. “Last year, (Freeport) had such a great team and I don’t think she got recognized like she should have. She’s filling the stat line this year. Not just scoring, it’s assists, steals, rebounds. She’s the Oscar Robertson of our team.”

Freeport was home with Waynflete Tuesday, goes to Fryeburg Academy Friday and welcomes York Tuesday of next week.

Yarmouth was 8-6 and fourth in the region following a 49-41 loss at Freeport and Monday’s 38-37 home win over Cape Elizabeth. Against the Falcons, Hope Olson had 16 points and Margaret McNeil added 10.

“We couldn’t score in the first half, but we fought back in the second,” Clippers coach David Cousins said.

In Class C South, NYA was 8-3 and sixth in the standings following a 55-42 home win over Traip Academy and a 79-41 home loss to Greely. Catherine Reid led the way in the win with 19 points, while Helen Hamblett had 14 and Maggie Larson 10. In the setback, Serena Mower had 14 points, while Larson and Reid added 10 apiece. The Panthers welcomed Kents Hill Tuesday and Cape Elizabeth Wednesday (see theforecaster.net for game story), travel to Old Orchard Beach Friday and visit Greely Tuesday of next week.

Boys’ hockey

On the ice, Greely’s defending Class B South champion boys’ team remained perfect and atop the Class B South Heals at press time after improving to 9-0 with a 3-2 win at Gorham and a 7-2 home victory over Gardiner. Against the Rams, Alex Wallace had two goals, including the decisive tally. In the victory over the Tigers, Jake MacDonald had three goals and three assists and Jackson Williams added two goals and four assists.

“It’s great having so much depth this  year,” said MacDonald. “We can go with lines one through three and know we can score. That’s great.”

“We’ve taken the season in pieces,” said longtime Rangers coach Barry Mothes. “We’re trying to stay strong here in the middle. The season just seems to deepen and teams get better and games get more significant with more Heal Points on the line. It’s been a good stretch of games against teams we haven’t played yet this season.”

Greely, which is undefeated and untied at the midway point for the first time this century, hosts St. Dom’s Thursday, then goes to undefeated, two-time defending Class A champion Lewiston Wednesday of next week.

In Class A South, Falmouth was 3-7 and seventh following a 2-1 home loss to Thornton Academy and a 4-3 win at Portland/Deering. Owen Drummy and Tyler Baker each scored twice in the victory, with Drummy’s short-handed tally in the third period putting the Yachtsmen on top to stay.

“It feels great,” Drummy said. “It was a great team win. Everybody worked hard. Hopefully now we’ll start a win streak. We just kept the wheels going and played hard. Everybody contributed and no one let down.”

The guys haven’t gotten down and they believe and when you believe, good things happen,” said Falmouth coach Deron Barton. “It was a good game all around and I think we just wanted it more.”

The Yachtsmen go to Thornton Academy Saturday and host Cheverus Tuesday.

The SP/Freeport/Waynflete co-op squad was 4-5 and fourth in the region after a 5-3 loss at Cape Elizabeth last Thursday. The team hosts Marshwood Thursday and Cheverus Saturday.
