Winter sports excitement continues in the Mid-Coast

It might not yet feel like winter, but the winter sports season has given us enough information to confirm that Forecaster Country is home to some of the best athletes in the state and that the next couple of months will be memorable..

Boys’ basketball

Brunswick and Mt. Ararat’s boys’ basketball teams both started the year 3-2, while Morse was 2-3 at press time.

The Dragons enjoyed a 67-35 win at Edward Little and lost at home to Falmouth (61-51) last week. Brunswick was home with Leavitt Tuesday and goes to Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

The Eagles dropped a 50-49 decision at Morse, then won, 63-59, at York last week. After going to Falmouth Tuesday, Mt. Ararat hosts Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.

The Shipbuilders followed up a 50-49 home win over Mt. Ararat with a 53-48 home loss to Marshwood. Morse was home with Greely Tuesday and goes to Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ basketball 

Morse is off to the best start on the girls’ side. Last week, the Shipbuilders beat visiting Mt. Ararat (49-29) and lost at Marshwood, 54-33, to fall to 3-2. Morse was at defending Class B champion Greely Tuesday and hosts Edward Little Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat fell to 1-4 after losing at Morse (49-29) and at home to York (71-28). After hosting Falmouth Tuesday, the Eagles go to Medomak Valley Tuesday of next week.

Brunswick lost at home to Edward Little, 47-42, then got in the win column and improved to 1-4 with a 45-26 victory at Falmouth. The Dragons were at Leavitt Tuesday and host Lewiston Tuesday of next week.

Hyde beat host Kents Hill, 46-35, last week to even its record at 2-2. The Phoenix return to action Jan. 5 at home versus North Yarmouth Academy.


Brunswick’s boys’ hockey team improved to 3-2 Friday with a 10-4 home win over Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon. The Dragons hosted Gardiner Tuesday and go to Cape Elizabeth Monday.

Mt. Ararat/Morse/Lisbon evened its record at 2-2 with a 5-4 win over South Portland/Freeport/Waynflete Monday. Next up is a home game versus Poland/Gray-New Gloucester/Oak Hill Jan. 5.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick improved to 4-3 with a 7-3 home win last week over Mt. Ararat/Morse. The Dragons hosted Edward Little/Leavitt/Poland Tuesday and welcome Yarmouth/Freeport/Gray-New Gloucester Wednesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat/Morse took a 1-7 record into Tuesday’s contest at Cheverus. After going to St. Dom’s Saturday, Mt. Ararat/Morse is at Edward Little Wednesday of next week.


Brunswick’s boys’ swim team has enjoyed wins over Morse (94-74), Lincoln Academy (62-24) and Edward Little (97-34). The Dragons girls beat Morse (111-58), Lincoln Academy (78-19) and Edward Little (114-50).

Mt. Ararat’s boys lost, 81-67, to Waterville and the girls lost, 83-80, to the Purple Panthers.

Morse’s boys lost to Brunswick, 94-74, and beat Waterville, 112-74. The girls lost to Brunswick (111-58) and beat Waterville, 112-51.


Morse’s wrestling team is 1-3 after a 42-18 win over Madison and losses to Belfast (66-18) and Erskine Academy (60-15).

Mt. Ararat/Brunswick lost to Cony (42-18), beat Madison (54-18) and lost to Oxford Hills (36-18) and Skowhegan (45-18) to fall to 1-5.
