The 2012-13 basketball and hockey seasons are underway and local teams have produced their share of excitement.

Boys’ basketball

Mt. Ararat’s boys lost their opener at Edward Little, 81-52, then turned around and downed visiting Oxford Hills, 53-45, and host Erskine, 67-65. Shyheim Ulrickson went off for 25 points against the Vikings. The Eagles were home against Skowhegan Tuesday, host rival Brunswick Friday and go to Cony two days after Christmas.

The Dragons defeated host Cony, 52-43, in their opener, then lost to visiting Lawrence (59-49) and host Edward Little (59-43). After hosting Oxford Hills Tuesday and going to Mt. Ararat Friday, Brunswick is back in action Saturday at home versus Bangor.

Morse also started 1-2, losing at Gardiner, 51-45, beating visiting Maranacook, 51-43, then losing at home to Medomak, 49-38. The Shipbuilders were at Lincoln Tuesday and played at Leavitt Thursday. Morse is back in action Dec. 27 at home versus MCI.

Hyde has been the most impressive squad in the early going, winning its first four games. The Phoenix defeated host A.R. Gould (46-38), host Pine Tree Academy (52-28), visiting Islesboro (72-25) and visiting Seacoast Christian (49-25). Hyde is idle until Jan. 4 when it hosts Valley.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Hyde hasn’t lost to date. The Phoenix opened with a 47-27 win at Pine Tree Academy, then defeated visiting Kents Hill (40-30), Islesboro (32-21) and Seacoast Christian (35-18). Against Kents Hill, Kara Fischer scored 14 points, while Diamond Brown added nine. Shannon Ward had 12 points in the win over Seacoast Christian.

In Eastern A, Mt. Ararat started 3-0 with wins over visiting Edward Little (55-52), at Oxford Hills (41-39) and visiting Erskine (71-42). After playing at Skowhegan Tuesday, the Eagles go to Brunswick Friday. Mt. Ararat hosts Cony two days after Christmas.

Brunswick entered the week 0-3 after losses to visiting Cony (61-50), at Lawrence (55-38) and at home to Edward Little (69-32). The Dragons were at Oxford Hills Tuesday, host Mt. Ararat Friday and go to Bangor Saturday.

Morse dropped its opener, 56-43, to visiting Gardiner. After a 57-40 loss at Maranacook, the Shipbuilders got in the win column with a 40-36 win at Medomak. Morse hosted Lincoln Tuesday and Leavitt Thursday. Two days after Christmas, the Shipbuilders are at MCI.

Boys’ hockey

On the ice, Brunswick’s boys opened with a 5-3 home win over Waterville. After falling, 6-3, to visiting Biddeford, the Dragons won at Cony, 5-0. Brunswick hosts Bangor Saturday and goes to Waterville two days after Christmas.

Mt. Ararat’s co-op team with Lisbon started beat visiting Fryeburg/Lake Region, 3-1, in its opener, then lost, 6-1, to visiting Waterville. The Eagles hosted Sacopee Wednesday and go to Edward Little Friday.

Girls’ hockey

On the girls’ side, Mt. Ararat’s first-year varsity team dropped its first six games. In their most recent outing, last Friday, the Eagles lost at home to defending state champion Greely, 11-1. Mt. Ararat was home with Lewiston Wednesday and welcomes Yarmouth Friday.

Brunswick started 2-5, losing, 4-2, to Falmouth in its most recent outing. The Dragons are idle until Dec. 28 when they host Lewiston.
