The new winter sports season has a couple of weeks under its belt and it’s clear that local squads are in for a lot of success.

With a mini holiday break looming, here’s a glimpse at where things stand.

Boys’ basketball

Hyde’s boys’ basketball team is off to a 4-0 start, capped by home wins over Sacopee Valley (59-36) and Temple Academy (61-30) and a 50-30 victory at A.R. Gould last week. Against the Hawks, Antoine Montgomery had 16 points and Greg Kidger added 15. In the win over Temple, Montgomery and Noah Horning each had 14 points. The Phoenix return to action Jan. 6 at Seacoast Christian.

Morse made it four straight when it downed visiting Medomak Valley last Tuesday, 62-49, but the Shipbuilders suffered their first loss, 39-36, at Mt. View Friday. After going to Camden Hills Monday, Morse hosts Leavitt Saturday and plays at Spruce Mountain Tuesday of next week.

In Eastern A, Brunswick lost at Lewiston last Tuesday, 57-49, but improved to 3-3 with one-point home wins over visiting Oxford Hills (53-52) and Bangor (39-38).  The Dragons were home against Brewer Tuesday, then are idle until Jan. 6 when they go to Cony.

Mt. Ararat is 2-4 after sandwiching losses at Cony (67-64) at home to Lewiston (56-54) around a 60-41 win at Mt. Blue. The Eagles hosted Edward Little Tuesday and play at Skowhegan Jan. 2.

Girls’ basketball

On the girls’ side, Hyde won its first three games, capped by home wins over Sacopee Valley (33-24) and Temple Academy (43-29). Against the Hawks, Lili Allen had 10 points and Diamond Brown added nine. In the win over Temple Academy, Allen led the way with 19 points and Kristine Bailey added 10. The Phoenix return to action Jan. 6 at Seacoast Christian.

Morse was 3-2 after a 49-31 loss at Medomak Valley and a 49-23 home win over Mt. View last week. After visiting Camden Hills Monday, the Shipbuilders play at Leavitt Saturday and host Spruce Mountain Tuesday of next week.

In Eastern A, both Brunswick and Mt. Ararat were 3-3 at press time.

The Dragons lost three tough games last week: 56-46 at home to Lewiston, 35-32 at Oxford Hills and 45-43 at Bangor. Brunswick was at Brewer Tuesday, hosts Edward Little Tuesday of next week and starts 2015 with a home game against Cony Jan. 6.

The Eagles sandwiched wins over visiting Cony (53-24) and host Lewiston (43-38) around a 59-35 home loss to Mt. Blue last week. Mt. Ararat was at Edward Little Tuesday and hosts Skowhegan Jan. 2.

Hockey

On the ice, Brunswick’s boys won their first three games, capped by a 6-2 home win over Oxford Hills last Tuesday. The Dragons then suffered their first loss, 4-2, at Edward Little Friday. Brunswick was at Mt. Ararat Tuesday and visits Cony Tuesday of next week.

Mt. Ararat improved to 1-2 with a 2-0 win at South Portland Saturday. The Eagles hosted Brunswick Tuesday and return to action Jan. 3 at Marshwood.

On the girls’ side, Brunswick took an 0-7 record to Mt. Ararat Tuesday. The Dragons return to action Jan. 5 at home versus Greely.

Mt. Ararat fell to 1-5 after an 8-0 loss at Cheverus Saturday. After hosting Brunswick Tuesday, the Eagles are at Greely Saturday.

Wrestling

Morse’s wrestling team is off to a 3-5 start. Saturday, the Shipbuilders lost to Oxford Hills (60-18) and Erskine Academy (59-18). Morse is at a tournament at MCI Saturday.

Mt. Ararat won two of its first five matches. The Eagles lost Saturday to Oxford Hills (42-36) and Skowhegan (52-20). Mt. Ararat joins Biddeford, Deering and Thornton Academy for a meet at Windham Saturday.
