David Wilson of Harpswell digs clams in Quahog Bay on Feb. 17. He and a small group of diggers cut through the ice at low water after the bay was reopened for digging after many years of closure because of bacterial pollution. According to Darcie Couture of the Maine Department of Marine Resources, the area will close again in June because of the seasonal pressure put on water quality by the area’s summer population.
