SOUTH PORTLAND — William R. Lyons, 86, of South Portland, died July 17 at Seaside Health Center in Portland.

He was born on Feb. 21, 1929, in Littleton, New Hampshire, the son of Carl and Martha Lyons. His younger years were spent in New Hampshire and Cape Elizabeth. He was a 1948 graduate of Deering High School in Portland.

Lyons worked as a bookbinder at Loring, Short & Harmon for over 40 years, and later was employed in the company’s purchasing and retail sales departments. After his retirement, he was employed by the City of South Portland at the municipal golf course and also with the school department.

He was predeceased by his parents and by a sister, Carlene Foley.

Lyons is survived by his wife of 48 years, Kathleen, of South Portland; a son, Christopher J. Lyons, of South Portland; a sister, Betsy Jack, of Wilmington, North Carolina; an aunt, Gloria Jock, of Corpus Christi, Texas; a niece, Patrice Foley-Olsen, of Windham; a nephew, Jeff Lyons, of Wilmington, North Carolina; and several great- and great-great-nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service was held July 24 at A.T. Hutchins Funeral & Cremation Services, in Portland. A reception followed at Thornton Heights Methodist Church, in South Portland.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lyons’ memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 383 U.S. Route 1, Scarborough, ME 04074, or to the Greater Portland Animal Refuge League, 449 Stroudwater St., Westbrook, ME 04092.
