PORTLAND — William E. Acton, 81, died peacefully July 17 at the Portland Center for Assisted Living with family at his side.

On Feb. 26, 1929, he was born in Boston and grew up in Biddeford.

After he graduated from Cheverus High School and St. Michael’s College, he served in the Korean War.

He was a career salesman who enjoyed golf, attending his grandchildren’s events and singing in the choir at the Portland Center for Assisted Living.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Portland Center for Assisted Living for their kindness and compassionate care.

He was predeceased by Alice Mahaney Acton, Ann Redlon Armani Acton, and Gladys Beech Acton.

Surviving are eight children and their spouses; Jane and Kevin Doyle, Elizabeth Robin Armani and Michael Christensen, Alice and Richard Lemieux, Harry and Mary Armani, Maryann and Jeffrey Glidden, Margaret Armani and Charles NeJame, JoAn and Dana Street and William Acton; grandchildren Katherine and Maggie Doyle, Kyle, Jesse and Jennifer Christensen, Meghan and Jameson Lemieux, Kimberly and Kelsey Armani, Sarah and Erica Glidden, Benjamin and Jessica NeJame, Luke Filipos and William Liam Street.
 
Funeral arrangements will be announced later this week.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
