SOUTH PORTLAND — Parks and Recreation Director Rick Towle said work to raze the clubhouse at Wilkinson Park on New York Avenue is expected to begin Monday, March 11.

The clubhouse, built in 1950 by the Sunset Park Association and now on city-owned land, is expected to be removed by the end of the month. Towle said demolition had been slated to be completed by March 1, but work was delayed in order to properly dispose of some hazardous materials found in clubhouse flooring.

Future uses for the park and replacement of the clubhouse will be discussed at a public meeting after the clubhouse is removed, Towle said.

The park, about seven acres in size, sits on land donated to the city by the Wilkinson family in 1994 on the condition that the land be used for recreation.
