BRUNSWICK — Wilfred J. Dionne Jr., 87, of Brunswick, died Aug. 22, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Togus.
He was born in Brunswick, June 20, 1926, the son of Wilfred Sr. and MarieAnna Pelletier Dionne. He attended Brunswick schools and was drafted into the U.S. Army at the age of 20 for World War II. Dionne served in Italy and was part of the provost marshal’s staff that coordinated repatriation of war prisoners at the end of the war.
Dionne married Juliette Richard, the love of his life, on July 24, 1948. They raised three sons, Richard Dionne, John “Stoney” Dionne, who predeceased them on August 22, 2009, and Robert Dionne.
In addition to his wife and two sons, he is survived by three grandchildren, Amanda, Eric and Rick; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Josh and Ryan, as well as many nieces and nephews who thought of him like a father.
Dionne worked at Bath Iron Works as a tool systems administrator and owned Brunswick Cleaners for 25 years. His family and friends were his whole life, and he loved being around them.
He also enjoyed his church, where he was an active altar server since the age of 8. Dionne loved visiting the shut-ins and bringing them Holy Communion. He served as a eucharistic minister, lector and usher up until the summer.
He served on the school board for five years, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Dionne will be remembered by many as a man who could answer any question about the past and someone whom could always be counted on. His philosophy was described as “if you can’t say something nice about a person, then don’t say anything.”
Visiting hours were held Aug. 30, at Stetson’s Funeral Home, Brunswick. A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Aug. 31, at St. John’s the Baptist Church-All Saints Parish. Burial with military honors followed at St. John’s Cemetery, Brunswick.
Donations in Dionne’s memory may be made to the St. John’s Memorial Scholarship Fund-All Saints Parish, 132 McKeen St., Brunswick, ME 04011. Masses may also be said in his name at St. John’s Church.
