As the fall sports season chugs toward its midway point, local soccer, field hockey, cross country, golf and volleyball teams continue to show promise.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed and what’s to come:

Boys’ soccer

Deering’s boys’ soccer team continues to turn heads. Last week, the Rams settled for a scoreless home tie against undefeated Gorham, but turned around and won at Noble (5-0) and at home over Windham (5-2) to improve to 5-0-1. Against the Knights, Fernando Lopez and Hany Ramadan each had two goals, while Francisco Alvarez added one. Ramadan scored three times in the win over the Eagles, as Paulo DeMarco and Abdul Azeez Kalayaf also scored. Deering was at Bonny Eagle Tuesday, goes to South Portland Friday, then hosts Westbrook Tuesday of next week.

Cheverus extended its win streak to three last week by blanking visiting Windham (2-0) and edging visiting Biddeford (2-1), but it fell to 3-2 Saturday after losing at two-time defending Class A champion Scarborough, 2-0. Mackenzie Hoglund scored twice against the Eagles. In the loss, the Stags were victimized by some bad luck which led to both goals, but played strong against the Red Storm.

“Unfortunately, we had a couple tough bounces,” first-year Cheverus coach Colin Minte said. “You can’t give up those types of chances against a team like Scarborough.”

The Stags hosted Sanford Tuesday and go to Thornton Academy Tuesday of next week.

“I think we’re still fighting to find our identity as a team,” Minte said. “We can’t give up soft goals against top teams. They’ll put away their chances. We’ve got a chance to be a team that can do some damage in the playoffs. We haven’t played our best soccer.”

Portland began the week 2-3-1. Last week, the Bulldogs won, 3-1, over visiting Noble (Matt Alvarez, Jonathan Bobe and Pavel Bobe had the goals), tied Bonny Eagle, 1-1 (Josh Irving’s goal on a penalty kick evened the score), then lost at home to Thornton Academy, 3-1 (despite a goal from Jonathan Bobe). The Bulldogs hosted Massabesic Tuesday and go to Marshwood Tuesday of next week.

In Western C, Waynflete fell at home last week to Falmouth, 1-0, then won at home over Lake Region, 4-0, to improve to 3-1. Milo Belleau made eight saves in the loss to the Yachtsmen. Clancy Mitchell scored twice, while Harry Baker-Connick and Christian Brooks each had a goal in the victory. After hosting rival North Yarmouth Academy Tuesday (see theforecaster.net for game story), the Flyers visit Western B power Yarmouth Saturday night. Poland pays a visit Tuesday of next week.

Girls’ soccer

Deering’s girls’ team continues to set the standard in the city. The Rams lost for the first time last week, 1-0, at Gorham, but bounced back and improved to 4-1 after downing visiting Noble, 3-0. Ewa Varney had two goals in the win (including a penalty kick), while Simone Lauture also scored. Deering was home against South Portland Monday (see theforecaster.net for game story) and visits Bonny Eagle Wednesday.

Portland evened its record at 3-3 with wins last week at Noble (6-1) and at home over Bonny Eagle. Against the Knights, Isabel Stehli had three goals, Madison Bolduc added a pair and Kate Johnson finished with one. Stehli and Chessa Hoekstra had the goals against the Scots. The Bulldogs go to Massabesic Wednesday and host Cheverus Saturday.

Cheverus sandwiched wins over host McAuley (2-1) and at home over Biddeford (3-1) around a 7-0 loss at defending Class A champion Windham last week. Against the Lions, Abby Goodrich had both goals. In the win over the Tigers, Goodrich had a goal and Olivia Mull scored twice. After going to Sanford Wednesday, the Stags visit Portland Saturday.

McAuley got a goal from Ayla Tartre in a 2-1 home loss to Cheverus, then won at Biddeford (3-2) and settled for a scoreless home tie versus South Portland. Tartre had all three goals against the Tigers. The Lions (2-2-1) were at Gorham Tuesday and host Scarborough Friday.

Two-time defending Class C champion Waynflete lost at Western A power Falmouth, 4-0, last Tuesday, then enjoyed a 5-1 home win over Lake Region Friday. The Flyers went down a player due to a red card and fell behind, 1-0, on a penalty kick in the third minute against the Yachtsmen, but hung tough throughout and got 11 saves from standout senior goalkeeper Julianna Harwood.

“It was a tough way to start,” Waynflete coach Todd Dominski said. “We can’t be a man down to a good team like Falmouth. I thought we played really well though. I was happy with our effort. We did create some.”

In the win, Arianna Giguere had three goals, while Esme Benson and Beata Vest both had one. After playing at NYA Tuesday, the Flyers host Old Orchard Beach Friday and visit Poland Tuesday of next week.

“I think we’re getting there,” said Dominski. “We need to get healthy. We have a lot of young players. We’re starting to find our way.”

Field hockey

It’s come as a surprise to many, but Cheverus entered Monday’s contest at Deering (see theforecaster.net for game story) still boasting an undefeated record. Last week, the Stags improved to 5-0 with wins over visiting McAuley (7-0) and Windham (2-1). Hannah Abbott and Abby Ford both scored twice against the Lions. In the win over the Eagles, Abbott and Becca Archer had goals. Cheverus hosted Gorham Tuesday, goes to Marshwood Friday and welcomes Massabesic Tuesday of next week.

Deering improved to 3-2 last week with a 4-0 home win over Bonny Eagle and a 9-0 triumph at McAuley. Kaytlin DiBiase scored twice, while Kristen Francoeur and Rylie Turner had the other goals in the win over the Scots. Against the Lions, DiBiase and Lili Kien both had two goals. Francoeur, Turner, Piesy Chhorn, Mia Thurston and Kerry Wells also rattled the cage. The Rams hosted Cheverus Monday, go to Windham Wednesday, host Gorham Saturday and welcome Marshwood Monday of next week.

Portland lost at home to Scarborough, 7-0, before getting back in the win column with a 5-3 come-from-behind triumph at South Portland. The Red Riots were down, 3-1, with 15 minutes left, but Lauren McIntyre scored her second and third goals to tie the score and Taylor Sargent added the winner and an insurance tally.

“We came together as a team,” said McIntyre. “We started playing like we know how to play. Once we got back into it, we were good. As soon as we tied it, we knew we could definitely win it.”

“This is a confidence booster,” Sargent said. “We know we can come back if we’re down.”

“We’ve had a rough week and we really needed this for our own psyche,” added Bulldogs coach Beth Arsenault. “We had to go out and get our confidence back. We had an immense amount of confidence after our first two games. We got taken back to earth a little bit, but the girls came together today and did what they needed to do.”

Monday, Portland (3-2) hosted Thornton Academy. The Bulldogs go to Westbrook Wednesday, welcome Biddeford Thursday and go to Bonny Eagle Tuesday.

“We have a lot of potential,” McIntyre said. “We just have to go out and work hard. We have great leadership. Playoffs is the goal.”

McAuley fell to 0-5 last week after losing at Cheverus (7-0) and at home to Deering (9-0). Samantha Wikowski made 21 saves against the Rams. The Lions were at Gorham Monday, host Marshwood Wednesday, visit Massabesic Friday and welcome Noble Tuesday of next week.

In Western C, Waynflete remains very competitive even though it hasn’t resulted in wins. Last week, the Flyers lost at NYA (1-0, in overtime) and at home to Wells (2-1, in overtime), then played host Traip to a 1-1 tie. Waynflete (1-5-1) hosted Greely Tuesday, goes to Old Orchard Beach Friday, then welcomes Yarmouth Monday.

Cross country

The cross country season continued last weekend.

Deering joined Bonny Eagle and South Portland at Massabesic, where the boys came in second as team thanks to race winner Yahya Hussein (16 minutes, 34 seconds) and third-place finisher Iid Sheikh-Yusef (16:54). The girls finished third, as freshman Lucy Turnavicus led the way individually (placing eighth in 21:43).

Cheverus (along with Scarborough and Westbrook) ran at Sanford. The boys were second to the Red Storm, as Parker Montano was second individually (18:01). The girls came in third, as Kaitlyn Dostie led the way individually (fourth, 21:45).

McAuley (with Biddeford and Gorham) ran at Marshwood. The Lions came in fourth. Adele Werner placed eighth individually (26:52).

Portland joined Thornton Academy and Windham at Noble. The boys were third (Brad Ravenelle was seventh individually in 18:17) and the girls also placed third (Darcy Hincks had the third-fastest time, 21:02).

Waynflete joined Cape Elizabeth, Lake Region and Yarmouth at Greely. The boys came in fourth. Peter Michalakes (20th, 20:18) was the top individual. The girls also placed fourth, as Phoebe Colvin-Oehmig came in 15th (21:45).

Friday, Cheverus joins Biddeford and Noble at Bonny Eagle, Deering runs with Marshwood and Thornton Academy at Scarborough, McAuley joins Massabesic and Westbrook at Windham, Portland (with Sanford and South Portland) goes to Gorham and Waynflete runs at York.

Golf

Waynflete’s unheralded golf team won its first two matches this fall, downing host Freeport (4-3) and Old Orchard Beach (5-2). The Flyers fell to 2-1 Thursday with a 7-0 home setback to Fryeburg. Waynflete goes to NYA Wednesday and welcomes Old Orchard Beach Thursday.

Cheverus extended its match win streak to three last week by downing Deering (12-1) and South Portland (10.5-2.5). Wednesday, the Stags fell to 3-3 on the season after a 7-6 loss at Portland. Monday, Cheverus went to Scarborough. The Stags visit defending Class A champion Falmouth Wednesday.

Portland, which was coming off a 10.5-2.5 loss to Scarborough, improved to 2-3 with the win over Cheverus. The Bulldogs were at South Portland Monday, host Deering Wednesday and go to Falmouth Friday.

Deering fell to 1-4 after losses last week to Cheverus (12-1) and South Portland (9.5-3.5). The Rams were home with Falmouth Monday, go to Portland Wednesday and play host to Scarborough Friday.

Volleyball

Cheverus’ volleyball team entered the week 0-6, still seeking not only its first win, but also its first set victory. The Stags dropped 3-0 decisions last week at home versus Falmouth (6-25, 19-25, 18-25) and at Thornton Academy (11-25, 19-25, 15-25). Cheverus hosted Cape Elizabeth Tuesday, welcomes South Portland Thursday and goes to Cony Monday.
