FREEPORT — Political newcomer Andrew Wellen upset decade-long incumbent Jim Cassida for one of two Town Council seats, Tuesday night.

Wellen toppled Cassida with a 655-528 vote for the District 4 council seat.

Melanie Sachs took the uncontested at-large council seat to replace outgoing councilor, Charlotte Bishop.

John Morang and Karin VanNostrand took the uncontested Regional School Unit No. 5 seats and Leeland Arriss, III, Fire Chief Darrel Fournier and Clinton Goodenow, Jr., claimed the three unchallenged Sewer District trustee seats.

Write-in candidates for the single Water District seat were not reported as of late Tuesday night.

A special election will be held Dec. 4 to fill the District 1 seat vacated by now State Representative, Sara Gideon, who beat-out challenger Jody James Tuesday for the House District 106 seat to replace retiring incumbent David Webster.
