YARMOUTH — Main Street under the Route 1 bridge will be closed due to ongoing bridge construction from 10 p.m. Friday, March 16, to 4 a.m. Monday, March 19.

The closure was scheduled for March 2-5. Maine Department of Transportation Project Resident, Peter Brown, said the original closure date was an estimate and as work progressed the project’s contractor, Reed & Reed, decided that “in the interest of having as short a closure as possible that it would be of benefit to them and the traveling public to push the date out.”

Starting March 16, there will also be a new height restriction of 11 feet under the bridge until construction is complete.

During the closure, westbound vehicles on Main Street will be directed to Route 1 northbound to East Main Street, then North Road to East Elm Street. Those traveling eastbound should take Route 1 South to Portland Street.

Drivers will be able to access Route 1 – which will remain open in both directions – from Main Street. Alternate routes for pedestrians and bicyclists will also be identified.

The work is part of a $4.1 million replacement of the 70-year-old bridge, funded by the Maine Department of Transportation, Portland Area Comprehensive Transit System, and the town.
