An article that appeared in The Forecaster on Feb. 20 inaccurately represented the Bicycle Coalition of Maine’s position on helmet use.
We support the state law that requires bicyclists under the age of 16 to wear a helmet. In fact, our organization was the driving force behind L.D. 1808, the same law that requires motorists to give 3 feet of clearance when passing bicyclists.
The Bicycle Coalition of Maine partners with the Maine Department of Transportation to teach bicycle safety to thousands of schoolchildren throughout the state each year. We encourage all cyclists, especially young people, to wear helmets. Information about bicycle safety, including proper helmet fit, can be found on our Web site: www.BikeMaine.org .
