Seemingly since the beginning of time (OK, since the beginning of girls’ lacrosse in the state of Maine), the month of June has belonged to the Waynflete Flyers.

There’s a very good chance that trend will continue in 2009 as this year’s Waynflete team was as dominant as any in the school’s storied history.

It took the Flyers 12 games to get a test and they held off host Yarmouth, 8-6, to cap a 12-0 regular season last Monday. Waynflete long ago wrapped up the top seed in the Western Class B Heal Points and is an overwhelming favorite to win the region and advance to the state final for the 10th time in the 12 years that the Maine Principals’ Association has overseen the sport.

The Flyers open postseason play Saturday when they host either No. 4 Greely (4-8) or No. 5 Falmouth (4-8) in the semifinals.

Portland was the only other local team to make it to the playoffs. The Bulldogs went 6-6 this year and finished eighth in Western A. Portland hosted No. 9 South Portland (4-8) in the preliminary round Tuesday (too late for print).

Cheverus (4-8), Deering (2-10) and McAuley (2-10) all failed to qualify for the postseason.

No time like June

The Waynflete juggernaut won the Class B state title a year ago and was simply transcendent this spring. The Flyers won their first 11 games by a composite 155-42 score, then answered Yarmouth’s challenge to wind up 12-0 for the fourth time in program history (Waynflete went on to win state titles in perfect fashion in 1998 and 2005 and lost to Yarmouth in the state game in 2006).

“I had no idea we would do this,” Waynflete coach Cathie Connors said. “It was awesome to have a close game against Yarmouth.”

The Flyers had no trouble with their potential semifinal foes, handling visiting Falmouth 16-7 on May 1 and downing visiting Greely 14-2 10 days later. Waynflete will have had 11 days off before it takes the field Saturday, but a scrimmage with longtime rival and defending Western A champion Kennebunk figures to help the cause.

“We’re treating every game like it’s the state championship,” Connors said. “Being undefeated makes it a little more challenging.”

The Flyers have no playoff history with the Yachtsmen, but have a ton with the Rangers, meeting them on eight prior occasions and winning seven times, including a 16-5 triumph in last year’s regional final.

Portland went 6-6 this season, the same mark it had in 2008. The Bulldogs earned the No. 9 seed and hosted a South Portland team they beat 7-6 at home May 19. The teams had no prior playoff history.

If victorious, Portland would visit top-ranked Gorham (12-0) in the quarterfinals Thursday. On May 15, the Bulldogs lost 12-6 at home to the Rams, a team they’ve never met in the postseason.

Schedule

The semifinals are Saturday and the regional final round is Wednesday, June 17, with games played on the field of the highest remaining seed. The Class A Final is Saturday, June 20 at 12:30 p.m. The Class B championship game is also June 20, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Both games are at Fitzpatrick Stadium.
