Adams was a clutch goal scorer for a co-op team that earned some huge victories over the course of an exciting season.

Adams started playing hockey at the age of 4 and took to the sport quickly.

“I like the creativity of hockey,” Adams said. “Plays aren’t really drawn up like other sports, so you have to be a good thinker. It’s a fast game. I enjoy the camaraderie of team sports.”

Adams spent his freshman and sophomore years at South Portland High School in his hometown, then came to Waynflete the next year, but he remained tied to South Portland, playing hockey for the SP/Freeport/Waynflete co-op squad. He was named to the All-State team as a junior and this winter, as a captain, he came up huge on several occasions, scoring six goals and adding nine assists, despite missing eight games with a knee injury.

Highlights included a hat trick in a win over York and a pair of scores in a victory over Scarborough. 

SP/Freeport/Waynflete beat Cheverus in the Class A South quarterfinals, then was eliminated by Biddeford in the semifinals.

“It was a great season,” Adams said. “We really came together and everything clicked. Beating Lewiston and Thornton Academy back-to-back was really fun.”

Adams also plays lacrosse for the defending Class C champion Flyers, is the editor of the school’s student newspaper and belongs to the Environmental Action Group. Adams will attend Colorado College next year where he plans to play club hockey.

Mitchell Adams, Waynflete’s Winter Male Athlete of the Year, was everything a veteran leader is supposed to be and his final hockey season was a memorable one.

Coach Joe Robinson’s comment: “Mitchell is a true leader in every sense of the word. He truly embraced being our captain and being a captain for me is not easy. He’s a highly intelligent person. Very cerebral and creative. He missed eight games at the beginning of the season and we struggled without him. When he came back, things started clicking and that’s not a coincidence. To show you what kind of athlete he is, he missed those eight games and still was a Travis Roy semifinalist. That pretty much sums it up because it shows how the other coaches around the league see him. He will truly be missed.”

Female:

CLARA SANDBERG, Junior—Skiing

Sandberg had an exceptional individual campaign and helped the Flyers be among the best teams on the trails this winter.

Sandberg has attended Waynflete since kindergarten. She stared racing in middle school and quickly emerged as a top skier.

“I love the Nordic community,” said Sandberg. “My team and other teams as well. I like to be outside in the winter. Skiing is the only individual sport I do. I like winning for myself and my team.”

Sandberg, who also plays soccer and lacrosse at Waynflete, was 25th in the freestyle and 33rd in the classical as a freshman and moved up to 10th in the classical and 12th in the freestyle.

This winter, she was even better, racing to a fourth-place finish in the classical, placing fourth in the pursuit and coming in fifth in the freestyle at the Class C state meet, helping the Flyers place second as a team.

“I was very happy with our season,” said Sandberg. “My goal was to come in top five at states, so I was excited.”

Sandberg, who also takes part in Science Olympiad and Math team, hopes to move into the top three at states next year.

If her career continues its steady climb, that’s a distinct possibility. Clara Sandberg, Waynflete’s Winter Female Athlete of the Year, has shown a flair for coming up biggest when it matters most and she’s not done yet.

Coach Wyatt Dumas’ comment: “Clara has worked hard each season to improve her technique, which has helped her ski more efficiently. She’s a very committed athlete and she stays active year round, which has helped her maintain a good training base. Beyond that, her other sports have helped her develop capacity to push hard and sprint using fast-twitch muscles and athleticism that aren’t frequently well developed in typical Nordic skiers. Clara is also just a great person to have on your team, an excellent role model of dedication and drive. Clara has an enthusiasm for competition that is contagious and drives others around her to step up their game.”
