SOUTH PORTLAND — Warren A. Rowell, 79, died April 1 in Portland after a brief illness.

He was born on July 29, 1929, in Melrose, Mass., the only son of Frank A. and Hilma (Ahlquist) Rowell.

He served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Berlin Airlift and Korean War, achieving the rank of staff sergeant.

In 1954, he graduated from Wentworth Institute with a degree in machine technology and worked in manufacturing in Massachusetts and Maine.

He also met his wife Frances in 1954, and they were married the following year in Wakefield, Mass. They celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary in January. Over the years, they fostered numerous children who were in need of care.

His life-long hobby was restoring and riding antique British motorcycles. When parts were not available, he manufactured them in his own machine shop.

He is survived by his wife Frances of South Portland; 10 children, Jamie-Lee Webber and husband Tom of Wells, Terry-Sue Neil and husband Gary of Scarborough, Warren Rowell Jr., and wife Kelly of Portland, Mary-Kate Healy and husband Sean of Sarasota, Fla., Ann-Frances Jackson and husband George of Fairfield, John Rowell and wife Wen of South Portland, Andrew Rowell of Haverhill, Mass., Peter Rowell of Bridgewater, Mass., Matthew Rowell of South Portland, and Christopher Rowell and wife Shelly Jo of Plymouth, Mass.; many grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m., April 19 at First Parish Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 170 U.S. Route 1, Falmouth, ME 04105.

Arrangements are by Independent Death Care, 471 Deering Ave., Portland.
