BATH — Wallace H. Hinkley, 91, of Bath, died Oct. 18 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Augusta.

He was born in Alton on June 30, 1922, the son of William H. and Amy M. Hinkley.

On February 16, 1942, Hinkley married Clara M. Saunders. He was very active with the Bath Senior Citizens, Bath Area Food Bank and Clothing Exchange. He enjoyed hunting with his sons and grandsons, and loved gardening.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II as a sergeant, with duty in the Philippine Islands and Admiralty Islands and in China after the war. He was honorably discharged on May 30, 1946, in Bainbridge, Md.

He was employed at Bath Iron Works as a welder, retiring as a cost estimator in 1985 after 44 years of service.

Hinkley was a member of the Corliss Street Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He devoted much of his adult life to serving his church and helping people in need.

He was predeceased by his wife, Clara, in 2004.

He is survived by his daughter, Judy Gallagher and husband Michael; three sons, William Hinkley and wife Connie, Wayne Hinkley and wife Linda, and Robert Hinkley and wife Lee; sister, Bernice Curtis; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Oct. 24 at the New Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. A celebration of life was held Nov. 7 at Corliss Street Baptist Church, Bath.
