FREEPORT — Wallace E. “Wally” Britton, 82, died peacefully at home on May 14.

On June 23, 1927, he was born in Livermore, son of William F. Britton and Winifred Ramsey Britton.

In 1950 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War for two years and the Army Reserves for four years.

He raised three children as a single dad for several years until he married Winifred Curit Wentworth in 1974 and raised their six children together.

Over the years, he held various jobs, from driving L.L. Bean to baseball games throughout New England, to repairing furnaces, and lastly, serving as the superintendent of the Freeport Sewer District until retiring in 1991.

He enjoyed mowing his lawn, cutting hay and plowing snow.

He had a tough exterior, but a heart of gold. He was always helping others, despite never asking for help himself.

He was predeceased by his brothers, William Britton, Jr., and Archie Wing, and a sister, Etta Stewart.

Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Winifred of Freeport; six children, Daniel Britton of Harpswell, David Britton and his wife Melissa, Melody Britton Hilton and her husband Everitt, Daniel Wentworth and his wife Brenda, all of Freeport, Keith Wentworth and wife Kelly of Durham and Kathryn Wentworth Lucas and husband Anthony of Lisbon Falls; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful dachshund, Molly.

A celebration of life was held earlier this week.

Arrangements are by Crosman Funeral Home, 40 Maine St., Lisbon Falls.
