CAPE ELIZABETH — The Arboretum of Fort Williams Park has been selected as a finalist in the 50 States for Good program and could win up to $50,000 if selected.

The Arboretum is one of 20 nonprofits vying for a share of a $150,000 award from Tom’s of Maine. The program recognizes and supports grass roots community organizations and has established a $150,000 sponsorship fund which will be shared among the top six finalists. The top winner will receive $50,000.

The Arboretum Project seeks to create native landscapes in Fort Williams Park and funding would help to create an arboretum of 15 landscapes as a free, living classroom for more than 700,000 visitors a year. It was selected as a finalist by a panel of three “goodness leaders” who considered the project’s positive impact, achievability and use of community volunteers as criteria.

Polling will continue through Sept. 13 and winners will be announced Oct. 13. Voters may cast a vote a day by visiting 50statesforgood.com.
