SCARBOROUGH — The town-wide leash law enacted Oct. 2 by the Town Council was repealed overwhelmingly by referendum Tuesday, 2,880 to 1,059.

The repeal reinstates the previous Animal Control Ordinance, which was amended by a 5-2 council vote. It allows unleashed dogs on town beaches throughout the day until next June 15.

The amended leash law had not been enforced, pending Tuesday’s referendum vote.

The referendum results and possible future steps to revise the ordinance will be discussed at a 6 p.m. Town Council workshop on Wednesday.
