CHEBEAGUE ISLAND — Virginia Harris Schroeder, 88, died Jan. 21 at the Maine Veterans’ Home in Scarborough. 

On Jan. 7, 1922, she was born in Brookline, Mass., the daughter of Florence (Harris) and George F. Schroeder.

She graduated from the University of Missouri with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and later received her master’s degree in education from Boston University. 

She enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1943 and served at U.S.C.G. headquarters in Washington, D.C., during World War II. 

After she was discharged she continued to serve in the Coast Guard Reserves and retired as a Commander.

She taught English and Latin for many years at Yarmouth High School where she was well known for her keen sense of humor.

She loved Chebeague Island and worked there as a realtor for many years.  From 1999-2005 she lived at Island Commons before going to the Maine Veterans’ Home. 

She traveled extensively and especially enjoyed cruises. 

She was predeceased by her brother, George A. Schroeder.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Beverly Schroeder of New Hampshire; her nephew David Schroeder of North Carolina, and her niece Phyllis Rector of Arizona.   

There will be a graveside service with military honors in the spring at Chebeague Island Cemetery.
