PORTLAND — Virginia (“Ginny”) Brett, 85, died Jan. 8 at her home, with her family by her side.
She was born in Portland on Aug. 30, 1929, to Walter and Helen (Tedford) Driskell. She graduated Portland High School in 1947, and married John L. Brett Jr. in 1949.
For the past 60 years, she lived at her childhood home on Whitney Avenue. Growing up, she also spent summers with her family at a camp on Highland Lake. She also enjoyed birthday parties at Deering Oaks, trips to Willard Beach and camping on Long Lake in Naples.
At age 16, she began working part-time at the Portland YMCA, and remained there until her retirement in 1989. During her career she served as executive secretary to three of the Y’s directors.
Upon retirement, she and her husband enjoyed season tickets to see the Portland Seadogs, served as ushers at Merrill Auditorium and volunteered at the Salvation Army Camp at Sebago Lake.
She was baptized and married at the Immanuel Baptist Church on High Street. For many years, she and her husband were members of Stroudwater Baptist Church and later attended Central Square Baptist Church, also in Portland.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her daughter, Linda L. (Brett) Moore and son-in-law Richard W. Moore Sr.
Brett is survived by her brother, James Driskell and wife, Inez, of Taunton, Massachusetts; two sons, Lyndon Brett, of Portland, and Laurence Brett and wife, Jamia, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and daughter, Lorena (Brett) Delcourt and husband, John Delcourt, of Windham. She also leaves seven grandchildren, Wayne Moore, of South Portland, Michelle Moore-Ledger, of South Portland, Laurence Brett Jr. and wife, Ann, of Rogers, Arkansas, Matthew Brett and wife, Heather, of Westbrook, Andrea Terrell of Enid, Oklahoma, Michael Brett and wife, Ann, of Portland, Oregon, and Racheal Delcourt, of Windham. In addition, survivors include eight great-grandchildren, Tabatha Moore, Caleb Moore, Caitlin Moore, Autumn Terrell, Aiden Terrell, Caleigh Moore, Isabella Brett and Taylor Delcourt.
Visiting hours will be held at Jones-Rich-Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland, on Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A funeral will follow at 1 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Edward Delong. Burial will be immediately afterward at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland.
