YARMOUTH — Virginia Ann Merrill, 94, formerly of South Portland, died Feb. 17 at a nursing facility in Yarmouth. She was born in Portland, daughter of Fred H. and Ella (Ahern) Merrill.
In 1933, she graduated from South Portland High School. She earned a degree in primary education from Gorham State College. Later in her career, she received a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine at Orono.
She was a teacher in the South Portland school system for 43 years, primarily teaching kindergarten. The Parents Club threw a memorable retirement party for her, which was attended by family, friends and former students from every class she taught.
After she sold her home in South Portland, she moved to the retirement home, 75 State Street.
She was a member of the College Club of Portland, the Auxiliary of the Mercy Hospital and the Irish American Club of Portland.
She is survived by her brother, Fred J. of Old Orchard Beach and Naples, Fla.; nephews, Paul of Portland, James of Portland, Peter of Augusta, Timothy of Scarborough, Andrew of North Windham, Gregory of Watertown, Mass. and Richard of Santa Barbara, Calif., and niece, Julie M. Robbins of Cape Elizabeth.
