HOULTON — Vina J. Hannan McGuire Sawyer, 85, died on June 2 surrounded by her family.

She was born on Aug. 7, 1926, in Linneus, to Mervin and Faye Hannan.

Sawyer loved working for the Visting Nurses of Aroostook and retired at the age of 77. She was the last living survivor of the Long Creek Air Disaster of 1944. Dec. 29, 2010, was declared Vina Hannan Sawyer Day by former Gov. John Baldacci.

Her joy in life was family gatherings, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her annual Christmas Eve parties.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Lyle McGuire; her second husband, Basil Sawyer; six brothers, Gerald, Blaine, Chester, Paul, Dale and Cederic; and one sister, Barbara Smith.

Sawyer is survived by sons Robert McGuire and his wife, Sheila, and Christopher McGuire and his wife, Linda; daughter Cynthia and her husband, Bruce Scott; stepsons Scott Sawyer and his wife, Linda, and Steve Sawyer and his wife, Lisa; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; sister, Vivian Fortier, and her husband, Earl; brother-in-law, Ervin Smith; sister-in-law, Evelyn Hannan; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the staff at Madigan Estates for their help in caring for Sawyer.

A graveside service was held on June 5 at Linneus Cemetery.
