PORTLAND — Officers Michael Sauschuck and Joseph Loughlin have new positions at the Police Department, as part of the chief’s reorganization effort.
Loughlin, a deputy chief who served as interim chief for about eight months prior to the hiring of Chief James Craig, is now assistant chief. Loughlin has been on the police force for 28 years and has helped Craig transition to the role of chief since he arrived in Portland in May. The assistant chief position replaces a deputy chief position.
Sauschuck has been promoted from lieutenant to commander. The commander position holds responsibilities including staffing and directing police activities, evaluating department goals and ensuring enforcement against crime is proactive and current.
Craig said Sauschuck, a 12-year veteran of the department, will help him “streamline the department and carry out my goal of better integrating the department with varied neighborhoods in the city.”
A former Marine, Sauschuck served on the Old Orchard Police Department for three years prior to joining the Portland force. He also led an effort among officers to create a police poetry calendar last year.
