NORTH YARMOUTH — Verdell Barter, 88, of North Yarmouth, died July 8 at Maine Medical Center in Portland.

She was born Jan. 27, 1927, in Robbinston, the daughter of Lou (Baine) and John Hayward. She graduated from Greely High School.

Verdell married Warren Barter, and the couple raised their three children in North Yarmouth.

She was an active member of the North Yarmouth Congregational Church and the North Yarmouth Fire Co. Ladies Auxiliary, and provided valuable help to both organizations. She also worked from time to time in area fish and potato processing facilities. But her primary occupation was being a stay-at-home mom.

Barter loved holiday gatherings, especially preparing special foods for the celebrations. She also loved animals, and enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, camping and fishing.

Barter was predeceased by her husband in 2002 and by her brother, Reid Hayward, in 2005.

She is survived by her children: Elaine Rooff and her husband, Michael, of North Yarmouth; Michael Barter and his wife, Sarah, of Missouri; and Blaine Barter and his wife, Karen, of North Yarmouth. She is also survived by her five grandchildren, Teresa, Serina, Jennifer and her husband, Jeffrey, Shawn and his wife, Amy, and Marisa; her great-grandson, Daryl; her brother, Bill Hayward; and many nieces and nephews.

There will be a graveside service Friday, July 17, at 11 a.m., in Walnut Hill Cemetery, Route 115, North Yarmouth, with a reception following at North Yarmouth Congregational Church, 3 Gray Road, North Yarmouth.
