PORTLAND — The Veranda Street bridge reopened to traffic Wednesday evening, three weeks ahead of schedule.
The bridge, in the East Deering neighborhood, was closed June 24 for repairs. The shutdown forced traffic to detour onto Interstate 295 to access Veranda Street and adjacent side streets between Olympia and Kensington streets.
A temporary bridge for pedestrians and cyclists was also erected during the construction.
Replacement of the 90-year-old bridge, which carries traffic over the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad tracks, was necessary due to deterioration of supports.
The Maine Department of Transportation hired CPM Constructors of Freeport to build the $1.2 million bridge.
Crews are expected to be in the area for a few more weeks, DOT said in a press release, removing detours and restoring the original traffic pattern.
