PORTLAND — Sentencing was postponed Monday for the man who admitted starting multi-million-dollar office fires in Yarmouth and York last January.

Sentencing is now scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. in Federal District Court.

Everett S. Stickney of Exeter, N.H., pleaded guilty on June 14 in federal court on two counts of arson. The fires destroyed more than two dozen businesses and caused between $2 million and $4 million in damages.

He also pleaded guilty to a third count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Stickney was scheduled to be sentenced Monday, Oct. 26, at 2:15 p.m., but the hearing was postponed because of a scheduling conflict.

The fires were started on Jan. 2 at 500 Route 1 in Yarmouth and Jan. 3 at a York office building. In Yarmouth, the fire started about 8:40 p.m. The next day there was an attempted burglary in Kennebunk, followed by an attempted burglary in York at 6:45 p.m., a fire at the Cottage Place Business Complex at 8:15 p.m., and another commercial office burglary at about 9:30 p.m.

Local police worked with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the state fire marshal’s office through March. Stickney was arrested in Portsmouth, N.H., on March 15 on suspicion of attempted burglaries in nine other cases.

Stickney was previously convicted of arson in 2000, was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon because he had a .45-caliber pistol when he was arrested.

Possible penalties for the two arson charges include mandatory minimum imprisonment of five years and up to 20 years, and up to 10 years for the firearm possession charge. He could also face up to $250,000 in fines and be deemed responsible for twice the loss and restitution to the victims.
