FREEPORT — Police said a Freeport woman died Thursday morning in a single-car accident on Route 1.

Lt. Susan Nourse said 24-year-old Miriam L. Urquhart was driving a 2000 Subaru station wagon southbound on Route 1 near Exit 24 of Interstate 295.  The vehicle went off the right side of the road and crashed into a group of trees.

The car was totalled, and Urquhart was trapped in the car, according to police. Several passing motorists called 911 to report the accident around 8:30 a.m., and Freeport and Yarmouth police, fire and rescue answered the call.

“At this point we are working on trying to figure out what happened,” Nourse said. “There will be a blood test and phone records will be reviewed. There is a lot of follow up work to complete now.”

Nourse said the crash scene was examined by a Brunswick Police Department accident reconstruction specialist.

Traffic around Exit 24 and Route 1 was diverted for about two hours until 11 a.m.
