SCARBOROUGH — Police on Wednesday identified Robert Taylor of South Portland as the victim in a fatal, one-car accident Tuesday morning on Spurwink Road near Higgins Beach.

Taylor, 72, of 89 Bonnybank Terrace, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred around 7 a.m.

Police said he was traveling east on Spurwink Road (Route 77), between Piper Road and Ocean Avenue when his 2005 Subaru Legacy struck a tree. A passing motorist saw Taylor trapped inside and called police at 7:10 a.m.

Police said Taylor was apparently unconscious when he was found, and the passing driver put out a small fire on the front end of the vehicle with a fire extinguisher. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, and will include test results from the state Office of the Medical Examiner.

Police ruled out suspicious circumstances and said speed did not appear to be a factor.
