BATH — Foul play is not suspected in the Wednesday morning death of a 6-week-old girl, a Maine State Police spokesman said Thursday.

“It is a tragedy within a young family,” Steve McCausland said.

McCausland said investigators believe the child died when she was unable to breathe after she rolled onto her stomach while sleeping in a parent’s bed.

Bath Police Chief Mike Field on Wednesday said police and rescuers responded to a 4:50 a.m. call about a baby in distress at a residence on the South end of the city.

“They tried to do their life-saving measures, and transported the baby to Mid Coast Hospital (in Brunswick),” the chief said. “At approximately 5:50 is when we learned that the baby had passed away. At that point we secured the scene and stayed with (the) family and the baby at the hospital until state police showed up.”

The death of a child younger than 3, regardless of the circumstances, prompts an investigation by the state police, he said.
