PORTLAND — The U.S. Coast Guard called off a search Wednesday evening at sundown for someone who may have jumped into Casco Bay near Martins Point.

The search began after a woman called 911 to report witnessing someone wearing yellow shorts jumping from the Route 1 bridge around 3:50 p.m. Wednesday.

The Coast Guard responded and was on the scene less than five minutes after the call and said no bodies were found.

“An individual called police just after we made the decision to call off the search,” said Coast Guard Lt. Nick Barrow. “He said he was on the bridge wearing yellow shorts and that he jumped down onto the embankment to cross under the bridge.”

Initially, Barrow said, the Coast Guard was unable to reach the woman who called 911. However, he said, she was later contacted and said she did not actually witness anyone in the water.

The Maine Marine Patrol and Portland Fire Boat were also called to the scene. A Coast Guard helicopter was deployed from Cape Cod and searched the area until sundown. Divers were not deployed.
