PORTLAND — The United Way of Greater Portland has hired a new president and chief executive officer.

Suzanne McCormick will replace Meg Baxter, who served as president of the organization for 20 years.

McCormick most recently has been president of the People’s Regional Opportunity Program (PROP). She has also served as chief executive officer of the American Red Cross of Southern Maine. Prior to that, McCormick for seven years was an employee of United Way, serving as leader of the Volunteer Development Division, Agency Services Division and in foundation development efforts.

“Suzanne McCormick is an inspirational and proven leader who we know will guide our United Way in its mission of improving people’s lives and changing community conditions,” said Chris Emmons, United Way chairman.

McCormick will be responsible for overseeing a staff of 30 and hundreds of volunteers. She will also manage and lead relationships with partner agencies and oversee the annual workplace campaigns.
