If returning to the Class B pinnacle for the first time in five years wasn’t enough, the Cape Elizabeth boys’ lacrosse team has even more to crow about after seniors Ben Brewster and Tommy Foden were named to the 2010 Maine All-American team.

Brewster has been widely recognized as one of the premier defenders in the state and helped neutralize Yarmouth standout Steven Petrovek and hold the Clippers to six goals in the Class B Final. He had 195 ground balls this year, scored a goal and had five assists.

“(Ben’s) been incredible,” Cape Elizabeth coach Ben Raymond said. “He’s been the best leader we’ve had in awhile, across the board. Getting younger kids involved, getting early to practice. He wins every sprint. He works really hard to learn the game. He’s just a great defender. He’s a great soccer player and that translates very well. He teaches really well. He’s a huge reason our defense is so good. He makes everything happen.”

Brewster will attend Bowdoin College in the fall, where he will play soccer and lacrosse.

Foden scored three goals Saturday while playing with an injured shoulder. He had 41 goals and 37 assists this spring and also grabbed 98 ground balls.

“Tom has meant a ton to this team and this program,” Raymond said. “He brought enthusiasm, spirit and competitive fire to every practice and game. He always expects a lot from himself, his teammates and coaches. He’s made me a better coach by always pushing me to do more, learn more and watch more.

“He’s grown as a leader. On the day he was injured (versus Falmouth in a 7-6 overtime regional final win), he wasn’t sulking in the corner with a bag of ice thinking his season was over, he was the most vocal person on the sidelines encouraging his teammates and waving both arms around crazily to get the crowd to do the same. He’s a great lacrosse player and has become a great teammate.”

One of the state’s premier football players, Foden will attend Division II Fort Lewis (Colo.) College next year.

Brewster and Foden were joined on the All-American squad by Brunswick senior defender John Williams, Falmouth senior midfielders Dan Hanley and Michael Kane, Portland midfielder Caleb Kenney, St. Dom’s senior attack Trevor Haefele and Yarmouth senior attack Steven Petrovek and senior goalie Cam Woodworth.

Congratulations also to longtime Cheverus boys’ coach Deke Andrew, who was given the prestigious Maine “Man of the Year” award, Falmouth’s Mike LeBel, who was chosen Coach of the Year, and Yarmouth’s Dave Maxwell, Assistant Coach of the Year.

The girls’ All-American team featured Brunswick’s Leila Mills, North Yarmouth Academy’s Courtney Dumont, Waynflete’s Morgan Woodhouse and Yarmouth’s Danielle Torres. Kennebunk’s Camille Auger was an Honorable Mention.
